Stein School is a unique and colourful school adorned by well-known Norwegian artists such as Reidar Aulie, Dagfinn Werenskiold, Henrik Sørensen and many more. In the 1930s, they transformed the school’s interior into an imaginative and colourful frame for teaching.

Headmaster Erling Elverhøy and Ingeborg Refling Hagen were the driving forces behind the works of art, words and poems decorating walls, doors, staircases and other surfaces. The school was in regular use from 1912 to 1972, and goes by the name "The Fairytale School".

Next to Stein School is the "old school" from 1852, which was in use until 1912.

The schooll is onlyt open during the summertime.

Welcome to the café at Stein School

In our lovely and rustic café, which used to be and old barn, we serve homemade cakes and scones, freshly made waffles and brewed coffee, ice cream and other treats.

Varmbadet – Drøbak Art Society

Welcome to Varmbadet

Drøbak's historic bath, Varmbadet, is located in Badeparken just north of the city center and is today a great gallery with a view of the fjord. The gallery, which is run by the Drøbak art association, presents various artists and expressions through periodic exhibitions throughout the year.

Drøbak Art Society was founded in May 1955 and has been a driving force in Drøbak's cultural life for all the years since. With enthusiastic and committed members, they have brought in high-quality artists of image, word and music – to the delight of both residents and visitors.

The history of the building that used to be a public bath house

Drøbak Varmbad was built in 1902, just 2 years after Strømbadet (Women's and Men's Bath) was established in Badeparken. Even then, the municipality and the population of Drøbak saw great opportunities to attract bathers to the town. It was the local builder Kristian Bruun, who erected the building. Bruun was a local patriot and poured his soul into erecting a beautiful, harmonious and functional building close to the sea's edge with an unobstructed view of the Drøbaksundet.

From bathroom and doll factory to gallery

In the mid-1940s it became too expensive to run the bath and in 1947 the Varmbadet was given new life as a doll factory. It has also been a studio for both the artist Jan-Kåre Øien and the film producer Lars Rasmussen. In addition to being the Drøbak art association's gallery, today the Verneforeningen Gamle Drøbak also has a permanent residence there and on the lower floor they have two rooms with exhibitions about Drøbak as it was and about the bathing culture in Drøbak.

Rolling exhibitions

During the year, there are many exciting exhibitions at Varmbadet. Here you can read more about the current exhibition.

The Flight Tower Fornebu

It is an exciting area under development hosting different events throughout the year. Here you find Caravelle Restaurant, Papirfly bar, artist workshops and art galleries, concert venue, a library, TV studio, radio studio and approx. 100 performing artists.

Henie Onstad Art Center

Henie Onstad Kunstsenter is a leading venue for modern and contemporary art, situated at Høvikodden, 15 minutes west of Oslo. Henie Onstad opened in 1968 and was made possible by a generous donation from art collectors Sonja Henie and Niels Onstad. Located in scenic surroundings, Henie Onstad includes 3500 m2 of exhibition space, Henie Onstad Lab, meeting rooms, a museum shop and a cafe.

The art center hosts temporary exhibitions as well as the Henie Onstad collection, which includes works by Picasso, Matisse, Beuys, Christo and famous Norwegian artists such as Weidemann. Henie Onstad also has the permanent installation, ‘Hymn of life’, by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. The art center is also home to figure skater Sonja Henie's fantastic collection of medals and prizes.

Guided group tours are available all year round – contact booking@hok.no.

Artistic Profile

Henie Onstad Kunstsenter was established in 1968 as a donation of the collectors Sonja Henie and Niels Onstad. The choice of "Kunstsenter," rather than "museum," was deliberate, signaling that Henie Onstad was to be not only a keeper of a strong modern European collection, but also a producer of experimental art.

Today Henie Onstad is one of Norway's leading institutions for the Norwegian and International art scene. The Kunstsenter is an active arena for debate and social critique, with a broad commitment to the arts and its audience. Its expertise, collections and historical identity lie in the interdisciplinary field, with special emphasis on the relationship between art, sound, performance and the historical avant-garde.

The Collection

Since its establishment in 1968, The Henie Onstad Kunstsenter collection has grown substantially. From the approximately 300 works at the grand opening, the collection now includes over 4,000 works of art.

This inventory ranges from a core collection of modernist works (dates 1920-1960), to special collections related to the Fluxus and COBRA movements, as well as the works comprising the sculpture park and the contemporary works acquired in the past 20 years.

Henie Onstad manages several large collections deposited or on loan from the DNB Bank Foundation, as well as private collectors Inger and Andreas L. Riis, and Erling Neby. Henie Onstad frequently lends works from its collections to important international museums. Additionally, Henie Onstad manages a large archive, containing documents and photographs related to exhibition and performance history, and a collection of artists books. The Henie Onstad archive is of particular value because of the art center's long history of musical and performance art productions and its progressive interdisciplinary exhibition history.

Henie Onstad

Sculpture Park

The Henie Onstad Kunstsenter  is located in the beautiful park and recreation area of Høvikodden on the Oslo fjord peninsula, surrounded by public trails, wharfs and shorelines. Our sculptures have close ties to Henie Onstad's exhibition history and are responsive to this scenic setting.

Towering at the sculpture park's entrance is Arnold Haukeland's Sun Sculpture from 1970. The sculpture was commissioned by Niels Onstad in memory of Sonja Henie. The park also houses the sculptures Jordkrefter, Runes and Nattens fugl by Haukeland.

Live program

With its annual concert series, Henie Onstad presents a vast lineup of concerts, performances and presentations with established and emerging musicians and artists.

Combining a strong exhibition program with a focus on music, dance and performance has been, and remains, a central part of Henie Onstad's profile. This original vision—of preserving the past, present and future art through dynamic and interdisciplinary activities—has continued to influence the Kunstsenter since its opening in 1968. Henie Onstad regularly partners with Ny Musikk, All Ears, The Ultima Festival, and NOTAM and is an important exhibition space for experimental performance arts and music.

Combine your visit to Henie Onstad with a nice lunch in the restaurant Piruetten, a stroll along the coastal path – a favourite among the locals – and a break by the beach overlooking the sunbathers and the nautic life at sea. Enjoy.

Easy acces from Oslo by public transport bus 160 to Henie Onstad Seniorsenter. Schedule at www.ruter.no

Coastal gems along the Oslofjord west coast

Throughout history, the west side of Oslo has attracted artists, bathers and Christiania's nobility to gather in the small towns during the summer months. No wonder the area today has 6 of Norway's Blue Flag beaches in addition to top hikes with stunning views and plenty of unspoilt nature.

A road trip through Bærum and Asker and Hurumlandet, takes you through various eras via charming summer gems such as Vollen, Sætre and Holmsbu. The area is best experienced by car but is also very popular to explore from the bike seat or by leisure boat. There is also a scheduled boat between Aker Brygge and Drøbak / Son with stops along the coast.

From industry and shipbuilding to small town charm
You can get close to Oslo and the region's cultural highlights by staying at Fornebu with sea views and bathing opportunities right outside your door. At Scandic Fornebu everything is ready for a lovely dinner, a game of shuffleboard in the bar. Explore the Fornebu peninsula with its art installations, exciting architecture, Nansenparken and magnificent coastal nature. Art lovers should also visit the Henie Onstad Art Center or Sjøholmen near Sandvika before the tour continues.

Take a tour of the old ironworks at Bærums Verk for a gallery tour and shopping, today a shopping center with over 40 shops and restaurants. The place is idyllically situated along the river Lomma. The sculpture park shows the country's foremost collection of Norwegian sculptors. Fill up the basket of delicacies for the drive from Smelters Mathus and crafts from the unique shops.

A stop in Vollen offers a whole day of experiences; unique shops with jewelery design and fashion, delicious Mediterranean lunch by the water at Vito´s or the taste of Greece at Elea. A popular activity is renting Jet Ski in the marina for a ride to the coastal pearl Konglungen and Middagsbukta, followed by sauna and sea bath at Varm in Vollen. On the other side of the bay, the Oslofjord Museum has changing exhibitions that tell about life on the fjord and boat building traditions. The Polar ship Maud was built here and is now for storage in Tofte, further south on the Hurum Peninsula.
In pleasant Filtvedt there is real danger of staying here in the beautiful white bay with a view to the lighthouse ……. but new experiences are worth the detachment.

World-class geology
You get the feeling of being in Southern Norway all the way along the long coast with small coves and beaches, maritime walks and white seahouses. Explore the unique geology where you see fossils of snails and squid in the stone urns in Slemmestad. The outfield is full of mushrooms throughout the fall, small undisturbed lakes for a dip are nice hiking destinations and you really get away from the hectic everyday life.

The painter town of Holmsbu
Rødangen and Holmsbu were early favorites among the elite of artists, known for their beautiful light. Here the coast is at some of its most beautiful where the fjord opens, the seals colonies reside on the islets and the many nature reserves manage wildlife and plant life. Rent a nice cabin and stay near this coastal pearl that oozes of life from Easter to the autumn holidays, but is well worth a year-round visit. Spend the evening with fine dining at one of the city's restaurants and cafes, listening to live music in the backyard or on the hotel's terrace before the small talk continues into the late morning.

When the morning light comes on, why not start the day in the robes before exploring the area either by renting a canoe, cycling or discovering the galleries for which the place is so famous. The hotel serves a good breakfast with sea views. Just below the hotel there is the possibility to rent the floating sauna and combine the sea bath, togetherness and sauna.

Royal scenery and farm visits
There is something soothing about the presence of the animals, sweaters knit from the finest alpaca wool and to touch the soft fur. Enjoy a day at Bergvang Gård, get close to the beautiful alpacas and ride into the forest on horseback. The Icelandic horse is fun to ride, it is small and strong. The tours take place in the beautiful area at Semsvann in Asker, in the backyard of the Crown Prince´s residence.

Wellbeeing and togetherness
Visit Holmen Fjordhotell to get care of stiff muscles and quality time. Enjoy the afternoon in the hotel's SPA with pool, steam room and jaccuzi. The evening should end with a delicious sea view meal, wine from the house's beautiful wine cellar and a game of shuffleboard.

** Have a good trip**
