Eidsvoll 1814 – Norwegian Center for Constitution

Welcome to Eidsvoll 1814 – the cradle of Norwegian democracy

As the place where the Norwegian Constitution was drawn up and signed in 1814, Eidsvollsbygningen (Eidsvoll Manor House) is one of Norway’s most important national symbols.

Today, the museum encompasses the house itself, along with ancillary buildings and surrounding park, the Democracy Centre Wergeland’s House, ticket sales and souvenir shop, the museum shop, Kafé Standpunkt with al fresco seating, and outdoor exhibitions.

Eidsvollsvollsbygningen

As the place where the Norwegian Constitution was drawn up and signed in 1814, Eidsvollsbygningen is one of Norway’s most important national symbols. The Constituent Assembly was made up of 112 delegates, who gathered here from 10 April to 20 May 1814. The Assembly declared Norway an independent nation, after more than 400 years of union with Denmark, gave the country a constitution and elected a king. The Constitution is dated 17 May 1814, which is celebrated as Norway’s national day.

In 1814 Eidsvollsbygningen was a private home belonging to the owner of Eidsvoll Ironworks. It is a beautiful example of neoclassical architecture, whose design draws inspiration from the ideals of antiquity, and it is unparalleled in Norway.

Kirsten Flagstad Museum

Norway’s most famous international opera singer was born at Hamar

Kirsten Flagstad is Norway’s most famous international opera singer. She was born at Hamar in 1895, in Strandstuen – a small house which today is Hamar’s oldest building and home to the Kirsten Flagstad Museum. The collection was officially opened in 1985 by the then Minister of Cultural Affairs, and on the date that would have marked Kirsten’s 90th birthday. “I always tell people that I come from Hamar; it is something I am very proud of, and I still feel that Hamar is my town!” These were Kirsten's word in an interview about Hedmarken and Hamar in 1958, and visitors to Kirsten Flagstad’s Strandstuen will be in no doubt that Hamar is still Kirsten's town.

Overnight fame at the Metropolitan Opera

Kirsten grew up in a very musical family, and her talent was obvious already at a young age. In 1935, she became an overnight international sensation when she made her début at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York as Siegelinde in Wagner's opera Die Walküre. The museum has a unique collection of costumes, props, photos, and artefacts reflecting the artist’s life both on and off the opera stage.

It also features Kirsten Flagstad Opera Hall of Fame, which celebrates the country’s best opera singers – past and present. Listen to her repertoire on CD or LP in the museum.

Nes Church ruins

The first stone church in Nes was built on the headland between the Glomma and Vorma rivers in the twelfth century.

The ruins of the old Nes church can be visited any time anf guided tours for groups by prior arrangement April- October.

In pre-Christian times, there was a sacrificial site here. The church was built as a long church in Romanesque style in the 12th century. It was set on fire by the Swedes during the Seven Years' War in 1566, but was rebuilt and expanded into a cruciform church in 1697. In 1854, the church burned down again, but due to the danger of landslides, it was not rebuilt.

Some of the inventory from the old church was saved and is now located in the new Nes church from 1860. Magnificent views of the confluence of the rivers and the Nesbygda area.

Today the ruins host concerts and weddings at this magnificent location.

Nes, or Store Nes as it was called in ancient times, got its name from the promontory formed by the meeting of the Vorma and Glomma rivers. Nestangen is worth a visit in itself. Here you will find varied vegetation, beautiful cultural landscape, reminders of major landslides, and, not least, the church ruins, which the national antiquarian called the most beautiful ruin in Norway.

Around the church, there is a park where benches and tables have been set up for a pleasant rest. The old church cabin standing here was moved here from Fenstad north in the village and was the place where Norway's first coin engraver came from.

From E16, it is well marked with signs. Outside the winter season, you can drive all the way down to the ruins during the daytime, where a parking lot has also been constructed. On the way down, you pass Ullershov farm with proud traditions spanning many hundreds of years.

Important information for visitors to Nes church ruins
