Walking with Alpacas

Alexandra Martinsen and Bjørn Brændshøi, two passionate alpaca breeders with more than 10 years experience. We breed alpacas for their luxurious wool and also for their mild, gentle presence which makes them perfect for human interaction. Alexandra is a teacher and she uses the alpacas in her work with children with extra needs. Bjørn is an engineer and focuses on breeding techniques and farm management. Our goal is to let people experience the wonderful alpaca up close and personal and we love seing sparkles in our visitors eyes when they do!

What we’ll do

You will be met by your host who will take you into the alpaca shed and into their field and let you meet the alpacas up close and personal. You will be taught what alpacas are, their origin, their history and of course why we have alpacas today and what we use them for. You will then help out by putting halter and leads on the alpacas, before each and one is given the responsibility for one of the alpacas for the rest of the activity, which takes approximately two hours in total. You will be able to pet the alpacas, take selfies and otherwise get a true and close connection with these very special creatures. We will then walk the alpacas on a scenic nature path in typical Norwegian landscape; fields, woods and hills – please wear clothes and footwear accordingly! We can adapt to visitor special needs. During the whole walk, your host will tell and talk about the alpacas adapted to your liking. We can arrange a typical Norwegian outdoor lunch on our camp site in the woods, using bondfire (if season). Contact us to plan such an outdoor lunch session accompanied by the alpacas! Contact us if your preferred date is not available when booking. Please note that we need to take the weather into account as this is an outdoor activity. If it is raining, it will not be fun for anyone (including the alpacas!).

What else you should know

Remember that the alpaca walk will be outdoors, in the nature. You will need to dress accordingly. Wear warm clothes if cold, especially gloves (you will be leading the alpaca) and hiking boots.

What to bring

Warm clothes (including gloves!) – if cold

Hiking boots or similar – if wet/snow

Water bottle – if hot

Welcome to us and our alpacas!

Bikeride Vollen – Blakstad – Konglungen – Esvika

This bike ride follows the coastal path in Asker goes through varied terrain in forests, along fields and through charming residential areas out to the coastal gem Konglungen. We start at Vollen Marina and cycle along Slemmestadveien towards Holmen.

Polar expeditions and coastal history

The Hurum Peninsula had a central position when ships were the link between both sides of the Oslo Fjord. Today it consists of beautiful untouched coastal landscape and charming villages.

Amundsen – first man to the South Pole

Roald Amundsen secretly planned the South Pole expedition when he built the ship "Fram" and the members of the expedition became the first in history to reach the South Pole point on December 4, 1911 ahead of the Scott expedition.

Roald Amundsen's polar ship "Maud" which he used on his second expedition to the Arctic was built at Anker & Jensen's shipyard in Vollen. The boat was launched in June 1917 and christened by Amundsen himself with a lump of ice.

Amundsen's next expedition across the Arctic Ocean is planned and in the summer of 1918 "Maud" finally sails from Oslo towards the northeast passage. Attempts were made to drift across the Arctic Ocean without success, and attempts were made to reach the North Pole by plane. The boat remained behind in the ice when the crew returned. In 1990, Asker municipality bought the boat from HBC for 1 dollar. After 80 years on the seabed in the northwest passage, the ship was transported home to Vollen in August 2018.

We start the tour at the Oslofjord Museum in Vollen. Vollen has a long and rich boatbuilding tradition. At the museum you can experience recreational boat collection and activities related to the recreational use of the Oslo Fjord. The kids can build boats with rubber engine and test them in the pool.

The trip continues to Tofte to Sagene Boat Harbor where Maud is stored. Discover the polar ship, see the fascinating construction technique and take part in the proud Norwegian polar history. Here is also a small collection of items found at the boat as well as a copy of the plane «Kristine». These have limited opening hours. The boat can be viewed around the clock, all year round.

Local history

Tofte Cellulosefabrikk was built in 1897 and became a cornerstone company locally. Tofte grew up as the largest town in the area with a strong working class culture and has several buildings that describe industrial history. Filtvet has been a port since the Middle Ages where goods have been unloaded and timber and ice exported to the major cities in Europe. There were once three iron mines here and after the mining ceased, Filtvet became a customs post for shipping in the 1780s. Filtvet consists of charming small houses, rose gardens, Filtvet Lighthouse with art exhibition in summer and the iconic Villa Malla with the white sand bay. Here there is rental of water activities in the summer.

Tour suggestion: Round trip along the coastal path to Sandbukta. 7.5 km

Trip in varied terrain with fantastic views. Follow the coastal path south to Østnestangen and Sandbukta. Enjoy the beautiful sea view from the lighthouse and see one of the country's oldest Viking tombs. The trip back goes via the forest along the tractor road back to the starting point. This stretch is described as the Oslo Fjord's most beautiful coastal path stretch with rich fauna and wildlife. The trip is sometimes very hilly and demanding.

Tour proposals starting at Losby Gods

Losby Gods is a great starting point for many trips in the summer; walking, jogging and cycling.

We would like to give you some suggestions for trips in Losby's deep forests and Østmarka's exciting nature. The suggested tours are mostly on forest roads or footpaths, the dotted lines show paths. These paths are blue-marked, and the number of km is indicated on the map.

The times estimated in the descriptions do not include time for stops/breaks, but only the time it takes to walk or cycle the route.

REMEMBER; Blue markings are summer trails. Red markings are cross country skiing trails for winter.

Over several centuries, Losby Gods has been the center for exciting excursions, activities and good food and drink for visiting guests. Feel free to take the opportunity to eat something good here before or after the trip. In the Losby Pavilion, they can tempt you with homemade buns, freshly baked waffles, coffee, soft drinks, ice cream and chocolate. Coastal Art Galleries

Asker offers a golden opportunity to combine visits to the producers of local food with historical monuments, coastal galleries, beautiful beaches and restaurant visits. The long coast invites swimming, fishing, boating and outdoor activities.

In Hurumlandet we find traces of settlement dating back to the Middle Ages.In the mild climate, the apples grow juicy and tasty. The farm shops have a good selection of local food from their own and other farms such as apple juice, eggs and meat, local drinks and some interior design. Here you meet the local people and the hosts on the farms and can get good tips for cooking.

Short-distance local food

Several producers in Asker are proud suppliers to some of the country's best restaurants. Are you planning a men's meal with friends? Shop with the farmer himself. You can get lovely short-aged meat at the farms in Hurum such as Værby, Grønnsletta and Biffgården and organic vegetables full of flavor at Bergsmyrene and Hauger Gård.  Check out our interactive map of the producers

The animals on the farm

Come and visit the animals on our visitor farms Bergvang and Solli Gård. Get to know our four-legged friends and join in feeding the animals.

At Bergvang you can ride horses or ponnies, dog sledding tours and meet the soft alpacas. At Solli great hiking opportunities and fresh pastries await in the farm café. Tour riding and pony riding for the little ones.

Restaurant experiences with a local twist

The restaurants and hotels in Asker maintain a high standard in a pleasant setting for both visitors and locals. Enjoy good food and good company in a pleasant setting whether it's an informal evening or a special celebration.
