The tour is well suited for cyclists with some experience, or for fit beginners who want a full-day tour. It is a total of about 69 km mainly on asphalt, with some sections on gravel. Nice restaurants and many bathing places along this route.
The tour goes towards Son station. Here it can be fun to take a detour down to Son town center with its charming small houses and galleries, good restaurants and the coastal culture center before continuing back and up towards charming Hølen.
The tour goes along the old railway line Smaalensbanen – which has now been converted into a cycle path. In Hølen there is a cozy café down by the river. Hølen is a historic loading point (from the 17th century) known for timber floating, sawmills and as Norway's smallest town until 1943. The settlement on the Såna River was central to the lumber trade with the Netherlands and worked closely with Son. In the early 1900s, Hølen was a local "treasure paradise" due to its own liquor association.
Cycle further through open agricultural landscape in Vestby towards Ås. At the Korsegård intersection there is a short detour to the right towards NMBU and Vitenparken on Campus Ås, one of the country's most beautiful parks, which surrounds a historic building complex. Here you get the feeling of walking straight into the world of Harry Potter, with beautiful older buildings, the oldest of which are from 1859. It is possible to book a tour of Vitenparken, which is a knowledge and experience center where technology, food and research satisfy hungry stomachs and heads. Open to the public. There is a café and exhibitions here.
Continue on past Lake Årungen. Here there are several nice picnic areas along the cycle path with views of the lake. At Nesset at the bottom of Bunnefjorden there is a short detour to the beautiful nature area at Breivoll Gård DNT. Here there is a nice farm café, sandy beach, kayak rental, sauna and it is possible to stay overnight in the DNT barn.
The tour then goes on asphalt past Vinterbro and continues along Gjersjøen to Hververnbukta, a great open space with a café and one of Oslo's finest swimming and hiking areas. Follow Mosseveien along the coast into Oslo. Even though there is a lot of traffic along Mosseveien, you cycle on a safe cycle path into the city center.
Have a good trip 🙂
